A Pelican at Blandings by P. G Wodehouse
Read by Martin Jarvis
The setting is Blandings Castle, home of the eccentric Clarence 9th Earl of Emsworth. It is summer time and much to the irritation of his Lordship, Lady Constance, his sister and Alaric, Duke of Dunstable bearing a picture of a nude he had recently purchased in London, are descending on Blandings Castle. Lord Emsworth soon realises that he needs an ally to lend moral support so he invites his brother Sir Galahad Threepwood, a member of the Pelican Club.
Various other characters such as Americans Wilbur Trout and Vanessa Polk, young loves, Linda Gilpin and John Halliday, Howard Chesney, faithful retainer, Beach and others all add to the fun at Blandings that Summer. The plot revolves around the Duke of Dunstable’s painting that everyone seems to want for very different reasons - Lord Emsworth because it resembles his prize pig and Wilie Trout because it looks just like his ex-wife! Fortunately, Sir Galahad is on hand to sort things out. First published in 1969, it is one of P.G. Wodehouse’s later novels.
